Executive Director’s Welcome

Welcome to the FSU Center for the Advancement of Human Rights!

Human rights have emerged as a signature concern for people worldwide in the 21st century. Since the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, the belief that all humans have rights that cannot be denied has won global recognition. Human rights are now the foundation of laws and policies in the United States and around the world. They are increasingly at the center of decisions made not just in governmental offices but in non-governmental organizations and corporate boardrooms as well.

Universities have a vital role to play in the Human Rights Revolution. The Center for the Advancement of Human Rights plays an integrating role in sponsoring human rights education throughout Florida State University’s numerous colleges and departments. CAHR serves as a resource center to teach, inform, and engage FSU students on emerging issues of human rights.

CAHR assists Florida and federal government agencies in crafting human rights-related laws and policies. CAHR’s mandate furthermore entails sustained engagement with human rights groups and activists worldwide. As an advocacy group itself, CAHR provides direct pro bono assistance to trafficking victims, asylum-seekers, and survivors of torture from multiple countries. Through its internship programs and the coursework it sponsors, CAHR trains students to better understand how the professional skills and education they acquire at FSU can be placed at the service of international human rights.

CAHR works to enrich the student experience at FSU, to enhance the university’s research mission, and to strengthen the public service mission of the FSU community.
